Do tej pory powstały trzy wersje Evangliona: anime z 1995, manga i (nieskończona) tetralogia Rebuild of Evangelion.

Rebuild of Evangelion
A teraz pozytywy. Czyli teoria symboliki.
Patrząc na sceny w You are (not) alone i You can (not) advance z jego udziałem możemy zauważyć, że jego wygląd na przestrzeni czasu odrobinę się zmienia.

[ENG] [SPOILERS]
Until now, known Evanglion has three versions: the 1995 anime, manga, and (endless) Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy. Despite many similarities, each of these series tells a different story the other characters. However, these differences are just little things (besides in silence what happened in the third part of the Rebuild) and the form doesn't depart so from the original concept. Finally every Shinji is a sensitive boy with a father complex, every Asuka manages confidence to hide weakness, every Rei is introverted, every Gendo is plotting behind back of SEELE, every Kensuke is Ikari's friend, and a lover of military ... and so on. Kaworu broke this rule and therefore deserved a separate post. I want to describe here sequentially each of the three versions and express my feelings about him. It will be very subjective.
Someone once said that due to occurrence of Nagisa in NGE Hideaki Anno done something amazing.
Kaworu appeared episodically in the series, he can be seen just for a less than 20 minutes. During this time, he had get a huge sympathy of most viewers, changed Shinji (at least temporarily), almost got destroy humanity and brought to a mental breakdown of protagonist. The most important in all this is probably how much influence he had on the audience. It is no wonder, at the end he is considered as the nicest character in the entire series. It is also the most mysterious Kaworu. We do not know where he came from, what he really felt and what was his personal goal, or even if he had it. He confided love to Shinji and made the boy for a moment more comunicative, we already know it. But if his behavior actually reflected his feelings? Did he, as the Angel had them at all? Apart from common theory that the Third and Fifth Children were united by close relationships there is one more by which Tablis only played human to satisfy his curiosity. That would be interesting, but it is unlikely if we consider his behavior just before his death. He allowed Shinji to decide of the future of Lilim. It is true that he is not alone, but he just presented the situation as if Shinji was able to choose the lesser evil. And he said "please". Perhaps he actually treasured the goodness of Ikari the most?
As it Yoshiyuki Sadamoto said, creating chara-design for Kaworu he combined features of Shinji, Rei and Asuka, and dressed him in an orange shirt to look unique and carelessly laced top trainers to add him some "street look". Additionally Anno confirmed the information that Kaw is the representation of an ideal Shinji's image of "me".
As a curiosity I would add that at first Kaworu has had to be someone completely different. Well, the first conception of his role in the series was roughly like this: in NERV headquarters appears young (rather younger than Shinji), mysterious boy with a cat in his arms. As soon turns out, the cat is an Angel and Kaworu is just his minion (it was done on the basis of controlling the mind, or something like that). Of course, when Anno went downhill, the concept of the seventeenth Angel has changed. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto in an interview confessed that his idea of Nagisa differs from that realized in the anime. Despite the changes introduced by the director Sadamoto still sees Kaworu as a kid. As he says, when he was watching the 24 episode of NGE for the first time and heard Akira Ishida's voice, he was surprised, because even he is full of praise for the seiyuu, he was surprised that his little Kaw sounds so maturely.
When Sadamoto came to the right moment in the manga, he finally was able to realize his vision. Nosy, childish, cocky - this is Yoshiyuki's Kaworu (also known as Karl). I must admit now, that this is my favorite one. Although he is mostly a jumble of of negative features, he won most of my sympathy. Why? He is the most reliable. His behavior seemed the most logical, even aroused in me a little compassion. I became intrigued by his beliefs. From the very beginning Kaw behaves like a cold bastard. But does that mean that he is clearly bad person? In his first stage, in order to help Shinji, who unsuccessfully tries to convince a cat to leave him alone , Nagisa takes a pet on the hands and suffocating. Ikari is horrified, but Kaworu believe that he did well (confirmed info). Then, without any takeover looks at Asuka's losing battle with Arael and just like that allows to use the Lance of Longinus, althougt he knows that one of his tasks was to prevent this from happening. Right after that he takes the place of knock-outed girl and fights with his own kin Armisael. With such a behavior it can be concluded that Karl is selfish and rebellious. As a tool in the hands of SEELE for him it's so well, so the problems begin for him at the moment when he acquires Rei's feelings. The boy has a totally mess in his head. Previously rebellious and thinking only of himself, at this point has become weak. After meeting with Armisael he still has an unpleasant character, it's true. But he's beginning be interested in people around him, and like Rei, he feels the need to be close to Shinji. He's like a teenager who can not deal with his own feelings. After all, he is such a teenager.
In the manga, Kaworu got the chance to develop, and this chance has been used. He is not only Tablis - Special Angel. Here he is primarily another child hurt by fate. He was also the twelfth Angel and wore the soul of the first, but apart from that, perhaps above all, he was was also a human. He had to live and do everything for SEELE, existed only as a tool. Sadamoto had done well by giving him hard character. Karl is a model young man. Formally he worked for SEELE but apart from that he was looking for some substitute of freedom, sometimes by simple disobedience. Finally he had been cauhht by loneliness, which he could not even recognize. It really touched me when he desperately repeats his "Why do you hate me so much?" How much frustration he had in himself to wear when he known it's so short he would enjoy life and probably by that time no one even find him a bit of sympathy? His hurt was evident from the beginning to the very end, when he blackmailed Shinji to kill him ongoing in the naive belief that someone did anything for him.
I am a little surprised that Karl isn't so underrated as the other two. After all he is the most advanced and longest-working version.
For a present the largest group in Eva fandom are fans of Rebuild Kaworu. Why the craze for exacly this character? No, I cannot answer for that question because I really don't know. I do not like this version, especially with the Evangelion: Q. And as I do not like and I couldnt find too many interesting information about him, please, do not count on any long speeches about him.
So here is Nagisa Kaworu aka Space Jesus. He is known especially for playing the gay-piano and wearing a collar with sonorous name of DSS Choker; which, contrary to appearances, is not used for choking, but only for spectacular decapitation. Besides, he have two annoying elements - purple T-shirt and oddly stacked hair. He likes beatboxing, repairing old SDATs and motivate Shinji for fixing the world. For special occasions he dresses plugsuit which special function is to divert my eyes somewhere in hell, just to don't see that suit. Looks like 17 years old, but next year he's turning 30.
Now some positives. So the theory of symbolism.
Before 2029 when Nagisa met Shinji, he sat on SEELE base on the moon, looking at the work on the Mark. 06. With financial reasons (read: to increase earned amount) he was sitting there completely naked and only once on the occasion of the visit of Ikari dad put it on himself a jeans. How did he breathed? Why the vacuum didn't torn his body? Why all this time he wasn't dressed? I don't know, it's Rebuild, I prefer not to ask about.
But. Looking at the scenes in You are (not) alone and You can (not) advance with his participation, we can see that his appearance over time slightly changing. In the first part he is very similar to his animated colleague '90s, not only visually. At this stage, he is still very mysterious and it's hard to understand what he's talking about, which can be considered as an allusion to a colleague mentioned. In the next film, his hair is a little longer and outliers, at the very end we see a scene in which Kaworu with gravely face descends into Earth in Mark. 06 and pierces Unit 01 with the Lance. At this point, we can associate him with nicy Karl, who probably holds a grudge against Shinji and conscience would not hamper him from doing him harm. Finally, 14 years later, we know Nagisa - gay-piano virtuoso, which is simply Nagisa in a purple shirt playing on gay-piano.
[I don't really like this theory. This should be treated as a wink to a more literate audience. By the way, the same applies to the theory of continuity. But more on that another time.]
